The companies firmly entrenched in the space don’t exactly roll out a doormat for new competitors. When you begin to show some of the executives in the industry that you are a threat to their ability to still afford that condo in Miami while paying for the twins’ college, it tends to anger them.
For example, about 2 years ago I knew I had to get my company’s website ranked highly in the Google searches because all good businesses have incoming clients while all chop-shops don’t have too much of anything incoming.
You won’t be able to just do a quick elimination search in the newspaper once a week, pick three jobs to interview for, and get one of the three. A lot of jobs out there are not even posted in the newspaper. You have to actually know of the company and go directly to their site. Be creative and look up all possibilities. You’d be amazed at all the types of jobs that fit in all different fields at a business.
Even if you draft your resume, have some others look it over for you. Use your career center contacts or the myriad resources on-line to get a sense for what employers are looking for.
Lots of companies may opt for advertising positions in the newspaper – instead of the internet – because they won’t get crushed with a pile of resumes that way. Remember, there’s more to research than the internet! Your local newspaper can help you find jobs right in your neighborhood.
